Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus)

A potentially fuller selection of images for this species (as icons) can be found at the Rufous Hummingbird stock page

Widespread in the west, Rufous Hummingbirds are the commonest vagrant western hummingbird to the east coast. Typically they arrive in October or November, persisting to Thanksgiving or beyond. Like many east coast vagrants they are mostly juveniles. The first photos in this page are of an immature male (first fall) whose gorget is molting in. The second series of photos are of an adult female. Some individuals are not identifiable to species, given the overlap in appearance with Allen's Hummingbird.
